Our Nutrition Education Program is a program tailored to low-income and CalFresh eligible families and individuals. This program aims to raise awareness about the principle of choices as a way to a healthy lifestyle and is designed to promote well-being, nutrition, movement, family, and culture.

The program strengthens the abilities of each participant to make small changes that can result in a healthy lifestyle and promotes the following goals:
–          Increase consumption of healthy beverages (especially water)
–          Decrease consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages
–          Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables; and
–          Increase daily physical activity.

The whole family can be involved in our program. “Wise Voices, Smart Choices” is designed and tailored for adults and “Young Voices, Smart Choices” is tailored to promote the concept of healthy choices among children and youth.

“Wise Voices, Smart Choices” is a six-week program (1.5 hrs per week, once a week) that comprises the major components of a healthy lifestyle- nutrition education; smart shopping; and physical activity. The six week series explores the following themes and activities:

  • Cooking demonstrations: easy and tasty recipes in a budget
  • Basic nutrition:  serving sizes and balanced meals
  • Chronic disease prevention
  • Food advertising and media literacy
  • Physical Activity  bringing families together by encouraging them to incorporate fun, physical activities into their weekly routines (includes a free Zumba demonstration)
  • Smart Shopping– a tour to your local grocery store to learn creative ways to buy healthy choices within your budget.

 

Wise Voices, Smart Choices has been successful in achieving positive changes in participants’ healthy choices. The participants have shown increase in the consumption of vegetables, healthy snacks selection, and reading labels while shopping.

“Young Voices, Smart Choices” is a 4-6 week nutrition education program designed specifically for low-income children and youths. Every session is an hour long.
The program implements the following interactive and fun research tested curricula:  “Food Smarts for Kids”, “Serving up My Plate: A Yummy”, “CATCH”, and “Harvest of the Month”, among others.

Our sessions include:
–          Fruits and vegetables taste tests
–          Basic nutrition:  serving sizes and balanced meals
–          Chronic disease prevention
–          Food advertising and media literacy
–          Fun physical activities

“Young Voices, Smart Choices” has consistently made a positive impact in changing youth’s eating habits. Our program data has shown 1) an increase in the consumption of total fruits and vegetables; 2) a decrease in consumption of unhealthy beverages; 3) an increase in daily physical activity; 4) an increase in consumption of healthy dairy products; and 4) a decrease in consumption of cookies and cakes.

Our sessions are primarily delivered at schools with more than 60% of the population in Free and Reduced Priced meals. For further information or questions regarding arrangements of nutrition series in your community please contact us.
