On June 15, 2012, the Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, announced that the Obama Administration, on a case-by-case basis, would stop deporting and begin granting work permits to some young people who were brought to the United States as children and do not present a risk to national security or public safety.
Under this directive, only those young people who meet strict criteria – including having no criminal record and having graduated from high school or served in the military – will be considered for an exercise of prosecutorial discretion. The policy does not make these individuals eligible for green cards or citizenship, but simply stops their deportation from the U.S. for a period of two years, subject to renewal. Read more.
